Shan of the Dead

October 30, 2007 - 9:28am -- swingbug

I had been planning on going as a witch for Halloween this year, but with the amount of sleep I've been getting, I think a zombie would be more appropriate. It would certainly be easier. I'd need no makeup and very little acting. It'd be a great disguise right up until my cousin, convinced the end had finally come, shot me, with a tear glistening in the corner of his eye.

Hmm.... Maybe not such a great costume.

Wake Up Call

If you are half as tired as I am this morning, then you’re not ready to work yet either. Here’s a bit of silliness I found in my inbox this morning, for those of you that might be described as having a case of the mondays. I’m regifting.

Umpkin

It's pumpkin season around here. I know, it's pumpkin season everywhere, but I live in the Sacramento Valley in the middle of agricultural fields and so around here it's pumpkin season on the ground and not just in the grocery store. And not just Jack O' Lanterns but baking pumpkins too.

We grew pumpkins in our yard this year and came out with a respectable little lumina, which we baked into bread. Shawn came home from the co-op with a couple of pumpkins last week which we've baked, barbecued, and turned into ice cream.

Twiddle Twiddle Bing

TWIDDLE TWIDDLE BING!

I know that sound.

TWIDDLE TWIDDLE BING!

My cell phone must have a low battery. I locate the phone and flip it open. Nope. As Mr. Poe might have said, silence there and nothing more. I hand the phone to the baby.

TWIDDLE TWIDDLE BING!

Cindy Loo Who at Bat

Last year, my family decided that for Christmas, we would all make each other presents. By “my family decided” you might suppose that there was some sort of democratic vote. Not really. Perhaps a treaty reached by the negotiations of elected representatives? Wrong again. It was more of a “council of wise elders” kind of thing. In short, by “my family decided” I mean everyone but me made this decision and then informed me of it.

Pumpkin

October 4, 2007 - 10:48pm -- swingbug

Shawn came home today with a bag full of groceries. “Look what I got,” he said, excitedly producing a smallish pumpkin from the brown paper sack. “What shall we do with it?”

I picked up the pumpkin and turned it around in my hands. Enjoying the weight and feel of October. Slowly I rotated it, looking for a good spot for a nose, or a bump that is screaming to be an eyebrow. Was it a happy pumpkin or a scary pumpkin?

I turned around to find Shawn looking up “pumpkin” in the index of a cookbook.

Oh well. Opposites attract, I guess.

Quantifiable

September 18, 2007 - 10:49am -- swingbug

It started a week ago Sunday. Luke began rubbing his head around his ears and tugging on his hair in a frustrated way. Shawn and I looked up at each other with eyebrows raised. He had new teeth coming in – this we knew. But this didn’t feel like a tooth thing. You get a sense for this stuff as a parent. It’s not quantifiable and it doesn’t fit in any pre-designated space on a medical chart, but there it is.
