Ladies and gentleman of the State of California, are you listening? Are you paying attention? Are your eyes open? Do you see any familiar friends of yours on this map? When your kids ask you why they can’t go to Sutter’s Fort like you did when you were a kid, are you going to have an answer for them?
Off the Hook
Two crochet projects that I’ve finished just recently.
My Grandfather’s Afghan
391 squares! It was a big project but I’m very proud of it. The yarn was TLC acrylic and the pattern was the “Granny Square Afghan” from “10 - 20 - 30 Minutes to Learn Crochet” by Leisure Arts.
State of the Household
A brief interlude in my contract work has led me to a life of housewifery in these past two months. This period of occupational inactivity has led me away from my computer, including my much neglected blog, and on to more real-world activities. I would apologize, but I’m not all-together sorry.
I’m not sure that I’m entirely cut out for this home life in the long term. As much as I enjoy playing at other time periods, I’m eternally grateful to be living in the here and now, to be able to enjoy the rights, occupations, past times that women’s lib has afforded me.
Modern
I’m not a huge fan of modern dance. A friend of mine once referred to it as “twitching to Tori Amos” and I confess that I can’t help but always think of it in those terms. I’m the same with contemporary ballet, by and large. I spend the whole time watching it thinking, “Turn out your feet!”
The following clip is a modern ballet piece called “Amelia” by a dance troupe called La La La Human Steps. It’s still not really my style, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t appreciate precision when I see it.
Blocking
I push my way through the heavy backstage door and into the hallway. A friend of mine is discussing costumes while putting the finishing touches on props. “Hey, didn’t you read the sign?” I say. “No talking. There are dancers on stage.” She gives me a warm smile and a rude hand gesture. I laugh and haul my gear back to the green room. Tomorrow night this hallway will be dark, lined with quiet dancers warming up their feet and calming down their nerves before they go through the door down to the stage. But not tonight. This is tech and blocking.
Hip to the Jive
I heard this snippet on a poetry podcast that I listen to. It made me laugh so I thought I pass it along. It’s from a box set called The Beat Generation which is apparently out of print so I don’t feel too bad reposting it here.
The bit is called “Basic Hip” by Del Close and John Brent. Enjoy.
Book Review
I just finished a stack of paperbacks and they’re looking for a good home. Anyone want them? If you know me in the physical world and you’re interested, send me an email. If you don’t know me, you can just read my witty remarks and then take your butt down to your local independent bookstore. Sunlight on your road.

Coincidence
P.S. Mac users, check out the Wimic dashboard widget for all your favorite comics. It’s a great waste of what could otherwise be productive work time. . . in a coffeehouse or otherwise.
