Cross-Marketing

February 10, 2016 - 7:18pm -- swingbug

The phone rings. I'm simultaneously making dinner and assisting in 4th grade geography homework. I pause in the middle of spelling 'Mediterranean' to grab the receiver.

The long pause and click announces a telemarketer better than a calling card.

"Hello?"

The subsequent slaughtering of my surname confirms as much.

"This is she."

"Hello, ma'am. My name is Chuck. I'm calling from Windows tech support. This call is regarding your computer."

"That," I say, flipping a grilled cheese sandwich, "is highly unlikely."

"Why is that, ma'am?"

Like it's 1999

I was five minutes away from the office this morning when I realized that I'd left my phone on my dresser.

It's not the first time I've left the house for work without my phone. Generally, I flip a U-turn and go back for it, but generally I notice before I've gotten more than a couple of miles away from home base. For most of society, our personal electronics have become an essential part of our daily apparel, haven't they? It's like leaving the house without pants. You notice.

The Pterodactyl in the Room

It was late by the time we all trickled into the house this evening. With a take-and-bake pizza sitting in the oven and a text from my Dad about the start of the first A's playoff game, I hunted out the remote in search of the proper station.

"I'm not sure we'll get it here," Shawn calls from the kitchen. "Not on any TV station we get anyway."

He was right. Apparently the Oakland Athletics don't rate out here in the greater Sac-of-Tomatoes area.

Meanwhile, my six-year-old is listening to this exchange. "What's a TV station?"

Camp Drupal

I believe I've mentioned that I built my shiny new site here with Drupal. And since Drupal has freed me from the necessity of hacking iWeb's xml ever again in my life (hooray!), I feel honor bound to mention that Drupal Camp Sacramento is coming up in a couple of weeks. Like Drupal, it's free, and if you're into web development, you can learn cool stuff there. Even non-Drupal specific stuff.

34

May 8, 2012 - 11:34am -- swingbug

So yesterday was my birthday. That means I've made thirty-four trips around the sun and I'm starting on another. And I totally planned on blogging yesterday to share it with you. Really, I did. I had the blog half written in the scratch workspace that is my brain.

I was going to blog a little about being older, about how that's okay, about how my thirties are pretty awesome thus far.

But mostly I was going to talk about simplicity. About how I don't want for much in this life as it is.

Nepotism

My dad wrote a bad ass blog. Go read it.

[Aside: Though his blog doesn’t specifically link back to it [dude, Dad, contact your webmaster and get that set up], Dad makes speakers and his blog is related to that endeavor. He also makes the world’s best barbecued chicken. Completely unrelated trivia.]

Communication

June 23, 2009 - 5:25pm -- swingbug

I’ve had my iPhone for less than a week and its already vastly changed the way I use my computer. Funny that. Historically, the first thing I would do when I came into the house would be head to my laptop and see what’s up. Email, RSS, Ravelry account, blog comments if applicable.
