Here We Go Again

January 13, 2020 - 10:25pm -- swingbug

I walked into a ballet studio today for the first time in I think about two years. I thought I was done with that one. I really did. I was at a place where I really didn’t even miss it that much anymore.

But after work tonight I went digging through the back of my closet, dug out my old ballet slippers, blew the dust off, and put them back on my feet.

And it’s like riding a bike. Except you know how much you’re screwing everything up and how bad your posture has gotten. So, picking up this thing exactly where we left off then.

All Dressed Up and...

September 2, 2014 - 3:12pm -- swingbug

On Saturday, I was putting my hair up for ballet class when my seven-year old walked into the bathroom.

"You look very pretty in that suit you're wearing, Mommy. Are you going to a party?"

"Thank you, sweetie, but no, I'm going to ballet class."

I paused for a second to consider how my son might have gotten the idea that a leotard and tights constituted appropriate evening attire. "And also, it's possible that we're reading too many superhero comics."

It's Beginning to Link a Lot Like Christmas

It's almost that time again. I'm sure lots of folks out there are covering their ears at the sound of approaching carols and yelling, "Noooo! It's too early!" I hear you. Or I would, if my ears weren't covered too. And yet, When you stop to look at the calendar, one must admit it. The hour grows late. I think Hanukkah starts this week, Turkey Day is right behind that, and then we're neck deep in jingle bells and candy canes.

Shiny Red Sports Car

October 13, 2013 - 10:03pm -- swingbug

For the past eleven years, the bulk of any strenuous physical activity I've undertaken has occurred at the barre in ballet class. (I may have mentioned.)

The string of logic that has taken me from there to here where I'm sitting right now might be better categorized as a thread, but it does exist. The long and short of that thread breaks down to wanting to try something completely different.

Hockey's different.

Snapshot

June 9, 2013 - 9:08pm -- swingbug

I had an awesome dance teacher once (Hi Adam, if you're out there) who said that, at any moment in a dance, he should be able to take a snapshot of the dancers and it should look perfect. All the connecting steps, the beats between the beats. Poised. Perfect.

Words to aspire to.

All Dressed Up

May 16, 2013 - 3:21pm -- swingbug

Alright, it's dress rehearsal time. There is an enormous platter tutu covered in feathers in the back of my car, and a tiara in my dance bag. (Actually, there's a lot of stuff in my dance bag, but who wants to talk about that when you have a tiara?)

I've made my pre-show trip to the makeup section of the grocery store, and, as per usual, came out with bottles, vials, and a long rant to anyone who would listen on how that particular aisle could be used to diagnose most of the self-esteem problems that our society bestows upon its female half.

Lack of Nothing

July 18, 2012 - 4:04pm -- swingbug

It's cool this week. Strangely cool. A high of 77 isn't quite rain-of-frogs or plague -of-locusts weird around here in July, but it's close.

Things are cooling down in my life a little too. It's been a month of constant activity from weddings to camping to running a kids summer-camp type program for a week. (Why? Because I'm crazy. Moving on...)

The Toaster Flies at Midnight

July 25, 2011 - 10:23pm -- swingbug

I crashed my head down on my desk.

“Having problems with that export code?”

“It’s driving me insane. Is that a problem?”

“Well, don’t work too long on it. Go home. Go to sleep. It will come to you in a dream. You’ll wake up in the middle of the night with the answer.”

“I hate that. I end up dreaming about trying to program the toaster.”
