Back to the Barre

June 4, 2009 - 3:14pm -- swingbug

The performance went well. It was fun, even. Yes, I have photos. No, I’m not ready to post them yet. (Shawn took over 2000 at dress rehearsal, so we’re still picking through them in a big way.)

A flu bug ripped through the cast, as per usual. It was running rampant at home as well. Luke got it Thursday night with a stunning display of gestational pyrotechnics, but was pretty much whole and happy by Saturday night when I left for my first performance. Thank the dancing gods, I didn’t catch it until Sunday night, many hours after the curtains were closed and we’d all gone home.

Show Time

May 18, 2009 - 9:40pm -- swingbug

A handful of friends and relations have asked about my upcoming dance performance. If you care, here’s the info:

The Starting Line

March 20, 2009 - 5:08pm -- swingbug

So Happy Friday. What a week, huh?

I started a new work project on Monday, the first step of which is gathering information from various local governments. Lots of phone calls and emails. Responses vary from, “Sure, have my data. Would you like a sandwich with that?” to “It’s a violation of national security for you to even be asking and operatives from Washington are bugging your house as we speak.” This is for the same data set, mind you. The Public Information Act meets Homeland Security, ladies and gentlemen. Please hold your applause.

So It Goes

February 16, 2009 - 10:08am -- swingbug

The show went well enough.  I'd be lying if I said it came off without a hitch.  There's no such thing.  Someone will always be performing either ill or injured and someone will always be prevented from performing due to illness or injury.  Someone will be thrown into a part with no prep time and pull it off admirably.  Someone will almost be thrown into a part with no prep time and get a reprieve at the last minute with much r

Backstage

February 13, 2009 - 12:00am -- swingbug

Dress rehearsal went well enough, which is to say that we got through the four seasons without floods, cyclones, droughts, or freezes.  If opening night goes so well, I’ll be happy.

Seasonal

February 12, 2009 - 11:48am -- swingbug

The take-and-bake pizza store has a sign out front: “Now Taking Valentine’s Day Pre-Orders!” Apple left a note in my inbox: “Apple TV: The Perfect Gift for your Valentine.”

You folks are reaching.

Performance

February 6, 2009 - 11:07pm -- swingbug

My mom and I went to see the State Ballet Theatre of Russia perform Cinderella at the Mondavi Center tonight. It was a beautiful performance, and in close competition for my favorite of the fairy tale ballets, if for no other reason then because there was no wedding sequence.¹ Thank you for that little piece of mercy.

Testing the Waters

January 6, 2009 - 11:02am -- swingbug

The studio reopens and the dancers file in. Our instructor drops us to the floor twice for crunches. A friend and I shared a resigned smile. Enjoy these crunches. This is as easy as it gets tonight. To say nothing of getting out of bed tomorrow morning.

Why oh why do weeks have to begin on Mondays? Who made that call?

I made it through my first class back with moderate success. This is my hardest class all week so if I can get through it without falling on my ass or tripping up anyone else, I call it success. Huzzah for low expectations.

Out of Context

December 26, 2008 - 2:10pm -- swingbug

Every now and then, I hear a random line pop out of someone’s mouth and I think “I’m totally blogging that.” I’ve got a backlog of them now. I’m sharing.

Overheard in the dressing room at the dance studio:
“I’d hug you, but I’m naked.”

Overheard at the bar in a sushi restaurant:
“I don’t eat eggplant. It tastes nasty, the texture is weird, and I don’t eat anything that’s purple.”

Family at the dinner table on Christmas Eve:
“Please pass the wrench.”
