Drunk Irish Zombies who Knit for Comfort and Also Taxidermied Raccoons

March 22, 2018 - 7:22pm -- swingbug

I hope everybody had a good St. Patrick’s Day. We went to the Irish pub down the way, which we do frequently, to hear a band that we enjoy, whom we also hear frequently. Except that there were all these people there. Like Chreasters only drunk. Huh.

I don’t begrudge folk the right to have a whiskey or two on St. Paddy’s Day. That’s a thing; I get it. Being fairly sober amidst a mess of drunk people, though, is only entertaining for so long.

Color Typing

April 5, 2017 - 8:07pm -- swingbug

So, some years ago I went to Stitches West, and I bought roving, as one does. It was purplish and a little sparkly and I spun it up into a skein of DK that I called Cloud City.

New Jersey

March 4, 2017 - 3:55pm -- swingbug

Friday nights at the rink are my favorites. It's not a league night. There are no refs, no whistles, no score board. It's just a pickup game for whoever wants to show.

Ten Thousand T-Shirts

September 6, 2016 - 10:14pm -- swingbug

We had a nice holiday weekend around here. Between canoeing and a ball game, I snuck in sometime with my fix-me pile in the craft room. I'd call it a "mending" pile, but most of the stuff perched on that small mountain require more than just a little TLC with needle and thread.

Here's one success story from the weekend. I won this t-shirt at a geography developers group meeting in Sacramento a couple of months ago. They give them out as trivia prizes for knowing things like how many degrees of longitude there are in a UTM zone. (It's 6, if you were dying to know.)

Time Change

March 14, 2016 - 4:43pm -- swingbug

I had a somewhat anachronistic weekend. Saturday I went to Sac ComicCon. I'd never been to a con before, though I had always kind of wanted to. This one was small, nearby, and inexpensive, so on more-or-less a whim, we bought tickets and gave it a whirl. They had the sorts of things that you would expect to see, presuming anybody ever truly expects to see two guys battling it out in full plate armor made from flattened mountain dew cans and duct tape.

Conversations with Younglings

February 12, 2016 - 4:34pm -- swingbug

My eight-year-old niece is learning to knit. She had about 6 inches of a scarf hanging off plastic needles at a family gathering on Saturday. In the midst of said gathering, I grabbed my sister and headed off on an excersion to the local yarn store.

"Kiddo, do you want to come to the yarn store with us?" I asked her.

"What for?"

"For yarn."

"What would I need more yarn for? I have yarn in my bag."

Halloweenish

November 1, 2015 - 8:15pm -- swingbug

Halloween has come and gone, and with much less fanfare than is usual in the house of Swingbug. With all that's going on right now, I didn't do much. I mean, really not much. I carved one pumpkin, that I bought at the grocery store no less, and that comprised the whole of the house decorations. I'm pretty sure The Great Pumpkin doesn't show up to the sincerest shopping mart to bring presents to all the good girls and boys, but sometimes, you have to go easy and stay sane.
