Download the Doctor

July 21, 2008 - 1:07pm -- swingbug

Since it was plastered all over the iTunes Video Spotlight mailing last Thursday, every geek on the internet has been talking about Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog so I’ll presume that no introduction is necessary, but I thought I’d give it my endorsement anyway. Go, download, enjoy. It’s worth the four bucks and forty-five minutes of your life just to watch Captain Malcolm Reynolds sing.

And may I salute this format? Can we get rid of TV now?

Garaged

July 17, 2008 - 9:31am -- swingbug

I cleaned my garage yesterday. That’s a good job to have done with. And by “done with” I don’t mean simply that you’ve organized the flotsam and jetsam of your life into cardboard boxes and signed the requisite treaties with the spiders. I mean that you’ve then showered off in ickies, thrown every shred of clothes you were wearing in a decontamination chamber, and are now enjoying a margarita and the praise and worship of your family for doing a job they were really hoping they weren’t going to get stuck with.

It’s good to be done.

California Burning

July 10, 2008 - 9:14pm -- swingbug

Forget Mississippi, it’s California that on fire now. The whole north half of the state, or so it seems. Up until the fourth of July, it seemed like maybe things were getting better on the whole. At least the air outside was clearing here in my home, smack dab in the middle of the Central Valley. It didn’t hurt to breathe and if you looked straight up you could see a little blue in the sky. One night the very beginning of July, Shawn and I saw stars. That’s a step in the right direction.

It’s All About the Journey

July 9, 2008 - 12:45pm -- swingbug

I’m not much of an audiobook person, myself. I like the weight of a paperback in my hands or the sound and companionship of a voice I already know and love. However, I know a lot of folks that do their “reading” on the go, on the bus, in traffic, etc. If this is you, check out this book.

Sunflowers

July 8, 2008 - 3:00pm -- swingbug

There is a house on the short walk between me and the grocery store that recently planted half a dozen huge sunflowers in the front yard. The flowers are planted beyond the lawn up against the house and were clearly intended to face west towards the street.

These people must be new around here.

Sunflowers are sun-worshippers. They face east as if they spend the whole of the long, dark night pining for the dawn, unwilling to miss even one of those first rays each morning.

Anything You Want

July 8, 2008 - 2:40pm -- swingbug

On Sunday afternoon, we returned from a week-long trip. Luke proudly ran around the living room announcing the color of each of his long-neglected toys by way of becoming reacquainted with them.

It was quite lovely round abouts Yosemite where we were, but it’s hot as blazes here.

In the early evening hours, with the trip laundry going in the washer, the kitchen restocked, and suitcases in various states of unpackedness, Shawn went to the kitchen to prepare cherry margaritas (defensive weapon). Luke was hanging around his knees begging for cherry pieces.

A House of a Different Color

June 27, 2008 - 4:35pm -- swingbug

Tra la tra la. My house is yellow. Huzzah. I’ve always wanted a yellow house. When my parents repainted our family home when I was 11, they asked me if I liked apricot or clover best. I said yellow. They said no. I said apricot. They went with clover. Hmmph. Now I have my very own house which I have been extremely fond of since we bought it, but I hated the color. It was the color of cat barf. You could almost smell cat barf just looking at it. One expected to see little flecks of grass and kibble in there stuck on the paint. We bought this house three years ago.

0 for 2

June 20, 2008 - 3:56pm -- swingbug

Zombies have been snacking on my brains. You know all those movies about people with long term memory problems? I have the opposite problem. I know who I am and where I live, I remember doing the dishes this morning and what day of the week it is. I just can’t figure out what I’ve done with the peanut butter to save my life.
