The Morning After

November 5, 2008 - 1:17pm -- swingbug

I checked the presidential polls before I left for my dance class last night at 7:00. At that point Obama had taken a few key states in the east and we were waiting expectantly on the others, knowing that this was going to be long over before California was tallied. My carpool buddies hopped into the car and informed me that we got Ohio. Warming up in the classroom, each student came in with reports. Midway through class a triumphant and emphatic shout went up from the jazz class next door. The teacher popped her head into our room, with her cell phone in hand. They had called it.

The Last Say

November 4, 2008 - 5:38pm -- swingbug

Two hundred thirty-two years ago, a whole bunch of people stood up to protest taxation without representation. They put their lives on the line so that you could have your say.

What did you do with that right today?

What would they say if they knew that today only about 50% of Americans show up to vote on election days? That many of us make time to sit at home and watch reruns of Friends but won’t make time to cast that vote that they shed blood to earn the right for? 50%.

I’m asking no such sacrifice from you. Just that you stand up and be counted.

Quitting Time

November 4, 2008 - 5:12pm -- swingbug

It’s about quitting time, isn’t it? Why not swing by your polling place on the way home? Dinner will wait.

This is pretty much the eleventh hour, folks. The polls close at 8:00 p.m. People who don’t vote lose the right to bitch about our administration for the next four years. Maintain your right to whine around the water cooler.

Vote.

Coffee Break

November 4, 2008 - 3:24pm -- swingbug

Check this out. Starbucks is offering a free “tall” coffee to anyone who comes in today with an “I Voted” sticker. Doesn’t it seem like a good time for a cup of coffee? You could take a coffee break now, go vote, get your sticker, and a get free cup of coffee on the way back to your office. I spoke with many people who have voted today and none of them have had to wait in line. You’ll spend more time waiting for the nice person at Starbucks to pour your coffee than you will getting to the voting booth. Go vote. Free coffee.

8:00

November 4, 2008 - 12:40pm -- swingbug

The polls are open until 8:00 p.m. today, just in case you were wondering.

Go Vote

November 4, 2008 - 9:34am -- swingbug

Go vote. Now. Seriously. I’m not kidding. I don’t care what you’re doing. Excuse yourself for an hour and go vote. Take a vacation hour. Do what you have to do.

Don’t know where your polling place is? Want to look at a sample ballot? The League of Women Voters can hook you up with that information.

Proposition 8

October 28, 2008 - 9:22pm -- swingbug

My blog, on the other hand, is an entirely appropriate place for me to spout off my political point of view, so here I go. If you don’t want to hear it, log off.

I plan to vote no on Proposition 8. I respect your right to disagree with me. I respect your right to vote differently and your right to blog or display signs or otherwise promote your point of view. What I do take issue with is signs like this:
Yes on 8 = Religious Freedom
Yes on 8 = Freedom of Speech
Yes on 8 = Parental Rights

Halloween

October 28, 2008 - 6:55pm -- swingbug

I haven’t blogged about Halloween yet, which is unusual for me given my preference for the holiday. But rest assured that Halloween has been progressing around the house if not here in my digital home.
