And All That Jazz

February 24, 2009 - 9:45pm -- swingbug

It was late last night when a friend reminded me of today’s impending holiday. It’s Fat Tuesday – Mardi Gras. Almost missed it entirely. Not that it’s a real big holiday around this house. I don’t really go in for Lent so the idea of spending the eve before getting rid of the butter and yummy things in the house is just an excuse to have pancakes around here.

Burst of Creative Activity

The night the show closed I woke up with a midnight sewing inspiration.  I went to the fabric store the next morning with Luke in tow and an idea brewing.  My idea came home to my sewing machine and turned into a complete and utter failure, but I pulled a nice skirt out of the ashes, of which I'm quite fond, and hey, I learned something.

Trailing

February 19, 2009 - 9:18pm -- swingbug

I spent a little time today traipsing through movie trailers for up and coming entertainment. There are some very promising films coming out in the blow-shit-up category.

Ian sent around the newest trailer for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Thank you, friend Ian. I have chills. Looks like July for that one.

I hate waiting.

And I Will Use Your Family Vacation Photos to Destroy the World...

February 16, 2009 - 6:08pm -- swingbug

As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t do Facebook. I don’t have anything particularly against it either, but this caught my attention and I thought you might like to know. Folks in a rush frequently click right through those user agreements and terms of service pages. (Guilty, right here.) Still, it’s good to know when you’re giving away any rights you might ever have to your family vacation photos, or worse.

So It Goes

February 16, 2009 - 10:08am -- swingbug

The show went well enough.  I'd be lying if I said it came off without a hitch.  There's no such thing.  Someone will always be performing either ill or injured and someone will always be prevented from performing due to illness or injury.  Someone will be thrown into a part with no prep time and pull it off admirably.  Someone will almost be thrown into a part with no prep time and get a reprieve at the last minute with much r

Backstage

Dress rehearsal went well enough, which is to say that we got through the four seasons without floods, cyclones, droughts, or freezes.  If opening night goes so well, I’ll be happy.

Seasonal

February 12, 2009 - 11:48am -- swingbug

The take-and-bake pizza store has a sign out front: “Now Taking Valentine’s Day Pre-Orders!” Apple left a note in my inbox: “Apple TV: The Perfect Gift for your Valentine.”

You folks are reaching.

Welcome to the Dollhouse

February 9, 2009 - 9:25pm -- swingbug

A friend reminded me via email today that Dollhouse begins airing on Friday. Holy crap, I almost spaced that entirely.

If you were unaware – and if you’re liable to care about this at all, then that’s extremely unlikely – Dollhouse is the new Joss Whedon show. Joss Whedon is the only TV show director/producer I can think of off the top of my head that has groupies... and I’m one of them.

Performance

February 6, 2009 - 11:07pm -- swingbug

My mom and I went to see the State Ballet Theatre of Russia perform Cinderella at the Mondavi Center tonight. It was a beautiful performance, and in close competition for my favorite of the fairy tale ballets, if for no other reason then because there was no wedding sequence.¹ Thank you for that little piece of mercy.

Itchy Fingers

February 4, 2009 - 2:55pm -- swingbug

I’m making my first felted project. It’s a laptop sleeve for my MacBook Pro. Don’t know what felting is? You knit something out of wool. Then you throw it in the washing machine... on hot. I know, I know. Contrary to everything we’ve ever been told. It’s like putting metal in the microwave or browsing the web using Internet Explorer; there are some things you just don’t do. Testing it on my gauge swatch felt wrong. I paced in front of the washer fretting. So what happens?
