I ate the last bit of Easter candy today – a Cadbury creme egg, if you’re interested in specifics.

It’s a funny thing about last bits. You savor them just a little bit more. That Cadbury egg was no better than the one before, but you look in the fridge and sigh, with both sadness and relief in this particular case, and realize that this is the last bit of chocolate in the house. Like the last sip of tea in the mug or those last sweet minutes in bed before you haul yourself up and start another day. You cling to them just a little bit longer.

Springtime in Davis

Walking out of a chinese restaurant last night with a bag of takeout in my hand:

"Hi."

There's a mallard duck standing in front of me on the sidewalk.

"What are you doing here?"

We're about half a mile from the campus creek, as the duck flies. In the downtown shops and restaurants of this little college town, one of us looks out of place. He waddles up to face me, about a foot away. He's looking at my takeout bag.

"Sorry. There's nothing in there for you."

He wiggles his tail feathers.

In Which I Find My Pants

I’ve been getting a lot of responses off my last entry – calls from friends with coffee and cautious emails from family. I guess I don’t know my own strength. I didn’t mean to enstill a panic. It’s just a comment on life, the universe, and everything... the state of the union... life in these Unites States... so please you. I comment. It’s what I do here. Fear not, faithful followers. I’m not trapped in a dank, dark depression.

I’m just a touch... lost.. for the moment.

Noted.

I found the sweater. Pants are still AWOL. On the other hand, I have two friends who have lost car bumpers this week, so it could be worse.

Also, I found a new ball of yarn for my stash. It’s funny, but don’t habitual drug users employ the word “stash” as well?

Maybe it’s not that funny.

Quite Contrary

One of the problems with vegetable plants being sold in six-packs is that you’re going to get six ripe somethings all at once. Some of these suckers are big. Shawn harvested a couple of bok choi last night and left them in the kitchen. I walked into the room and found that our dining table had disappeared underneath Audrey 2. Mean green mother from outer space, indeed.

With all the greens coming in at once, we took a page from Tomorrowland’s book and let one or two of each keep on growing and flower.

We found some surprising things.

What You Read

March 22, 2009 - 11:50am -- swingbug

I’ve discovered audio books recently. Historically, I’ve never cared for them much. I prefer a quite moment in the sunshine with a tangible paperback in my hands and my own inner voice coloring the characters. But you know what? Quite moments in the sunshine? Not so much a part of my life right now. In the brief hours between when we’ve got the kid asleep, toys corralled and dishes at least artfully stacked, to when I push myself into bed, my books have to compete with my yarn and lately the books have been losing.
