A Force To Be Reckoned With

June 3, 2010 - 8:17pm -- swingbug

We don’t do a whole lot of TV in my household. We don’t have cable. We like to keep the inbound visual media our kid is exposed to infrequent, we always pre-approve it, and when possible we watch it with him. I don’t want to sound like an ogre. It’s just that there’s a lot of questionable material out there and he’s impressionable.

And Extra Onions

May 28, 2010 - 4:56pm -- swingbug

A (... uh... well... let's call it a) scheduling issue had me so angry last night, it was leaking out of my eyes.  It was no one's fault, I reminded myself.  Not really.  Some advanced notice might have been preferable.  I talked it over with someone calmer and more rational than myself, decided on a proper course of action, and that's that, right?

How are Things on the ol’ Homestead?

May 19, 2010 - 9:00pm -- swingbug

"Hey Mom.”

“Hey Bug.”

“So I hear someone tried to blow up the restaurant next to your office.”

“Yep.”

For the record, my mother lives in Napa, not Bosnia.

“Why blow up a Thai restaurant?  I mean, there’s two Italian places on every block.  Why not take one of those out?”

“Actually, the news story had it wrong.  It was closer to the health club.”

“Oh, that makes more sense.”

“Mmmhmm.”

Sticky Situation

May 19, 2010 - 8:52pm -- swingbug

"Does anybody have a sticky note?"

I pull a small purple pad of post-its out of my desk drawer and toss them to Ian.  The pad is clean, crisp, and unused.  I touch it on the edges.

As I turn back to my computer I say, "But if I catch you putting them on your monitor, I'm taking them back."

A one-syllable laugh issues from another desk.

"Pet peeve?"

Uh-oh.

"Uh, yeah.  Big time."

Two Left Feet

May 14, 2010 - 9:27pm -- swingbug

I showed up to ballet tonight having forgotten my leotard and with only two left shoes in my dance bag. Does that just lay my day right out there for you?

I might have bailed but a particularly awesome teacher was subbing and I had rearranged my whole family’s schedule so I could be there. Also, I spent the bulk of the day writing JavaScript which is a little like looking at the world from the wrong end of a telescope. I wanted to move, and not through a for loop, you know?

So frack it. I danced anyway. Best class I’ve had in two weeks.

Sunset over El Cerrito

May 11, 2010 - 9:32pm -- swingbug

You may have heard me mention (or curse or lament) the status of my long overdue Invisibility Shawl, which I began last summer. The shawl pattern was for the light airy sort of thing that would be perfect to wrap around bare shoulders for a evening dress, and some time towards late fall or early winter of last year, while I was safely entrenched in the Great Christmas Sock Project of 2010, I vowed to wear that shawl to the ballet in the coming season.

The Month of May

May 3, 2010 - 10:08pm -- swingbug

Something very odd happened to me today. I was hot. I know, how bizarre, huh? I was sitting outside on my lunch break in the sunshine listening to an audio recording of Dune on my iPod (probably not helping) and I realized I was legitimately too warm. This rarely happens to me. Welcome May.

Break

April 21, 2010 - 4:00pm -- swingbug

I'm talking about that feeling like you've overslept, that still-sleepy feeling you never can shake. Do you know that feeling? It's like your foot has fallen asleep and you've tried to move it, and any minute that rush of pins and needles will arrive, but this is the feeling just before that. Cold, but not like cold coming at you from the outside. Not cold like wind on your face or ice in your mouth. Cold like physics class described it: an absence of warmth.

Is this making sense?
