Case Statements

February 21, 2011 - 12:00am -- swingbug

I’m going through the bookcase. Cases. It seems like we’ve got books crammed on every flat surface in the house. When Luke started crawling we moved everything but the board books off the first shelf and started squeezing them up higher. When he started standing, the second shelf moved up into whatever diagonal sideways backwards nooks and crannies were left. By the time he was walking, they were in haphazard flap-jack stacks piled from the top shelf to the ceiling, with all the salvaged dust jackets in a separate stack.

Road Trip: Sebastopol

February 19, 2011 - 1:18pm -- swingbug

This may surprise you, but large-scale travel is not my thing. I like my house, my yarn basket, my yard, my coffee shop (taurus). I’m fond of my rut; I’ve spent a long time getting it just right, you know? I suppose we’d all like to imagine ourselves in Lothlórien’s enchanted woods, but were I to inhabit Middle Earth, I’d grow some hair on my feet and find myself a nice hobbit hole. I’m all up for a little explore, but I prefer it in single-serving sizes.

Countdown

February 10, 2011 - 9:50pm -- swingbug

We’re almost down to it. I’ve got one week, less a handful of hours, to keep my 2010 resolutions.

You folks at home are thinking that I’m in dire need of new calendar, right? I’m a week past the start Chinese New Year, a full two months past the standard Gregorian calendar, and the groundhog already said spring is on the way. Fair points.

Crow on the Radio

January 18, 2011 - 10:19pm -- swingbug

Hey, I’m going to be on the radio on Wednesday. Dr. Andy of Dr. Andy’s Poetry and Technology Hour on KDVS has invited The Yolo Crow to swing by and plug the poetry reading on Friday, which of course you’re all attending, right? Of course you are. But if you’re in the Davis area and you want to hear me not make an ass of myself (I believe in optimism) on the radio, tune in to 90.3 FM Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.

Out of Doors

January 18, 2011 - 9:17pm -- swingbug

It’s funny how a littlest thing can change your perspective. My dad recently gifted me a little redwood cabinet he made ‘round about the time I was born. When I was a kid, it hung in our kitchen. There were creamers in it. Two of them were shaped like cows.

I don’t know what happened to the creamers, but the little cabinet found its way to my house and on Sunday, I hung it in our bathroom. Which prompted me to sort through all my hairpins and corral them into little jars that fit nicely in the cabinet. Shawn and I stood back to admire the addition.

Comic Books and Kleenex

January 11, 2011 - 2:02pm -- swingbug

I’m sick, so that’s me on the couch with kleenex and a stack of comic books. All things being equal I’d rather be well and at work, but some quiet time in the house doesn’t suck either. And being sick, I feel justified in ignoring all the household messes that I might otherwise have felt guilty about not cleaning. Now I can curl up with a cup of tea and watch Ripley massacre a nest of Aliens with a blow torch in peace.

Pasta

December 27, 2010 - 9:30pm -- swingbug

Curled up on the couch with a plate of takeout pasta and a book about women who can just take off to Italy when they need to find themselves.  I look down at my fettuccine.  I went to an Italian restaurant.  (Not the fancy one, mind you; the one where they let you color on the tables.)  And I'm not lost. Just a little lonely tonight.
