Crow’s Nest

January 15, 2010 - 8:20pm -- swingbug

I dropped Luke off at school this morning and went to the dentist. Between the dentist and a meeting with a client I swung by to pick up the Crows from the printer. I grabbed half a bagel at the tail end of my meeting, picked up the kid, and put him down for a nap. When his head hit the pillow, I got to work prepping the Crow copies that go out to the submitters and and balancing the books so I could make my deliveries. I woke Luke up at 3:30 and threw him in the car with nap hair and a cookie. Three book stores later it was 5:15. We met Shawn for dinner at Steve’s in downtown Davis.

Twenty Seconds to Midnight

January 1, 2010 - 10:13pm -- swingbug

Shawn and I sat on the floor in a quiet living room by the light of the Christmas tree and the embers in the fireplace, each holding a glass of late zinfandel and watching the clock on his iPhone count down to midnight.

Twenty seconds early, our neighbors erupted in a tumult of cheers and noise makers. Flashing lights from roman candles and piccolo petes shone though our windows. From the decibel level, you would have sworn we were at the big noisy party after all.

Once in a Blue Moon

December 31, 2009 - 3:16pm -- swingbug

Ania informed me yesterday that tonight there will be a full moon, and not only a full moon, but a blue moon at that, and apparently we haven’t had a blue moon on New Year’s Eve for nineteen years. So there.

That means that we’re starting off the year halfway through the lunar cycle. And empirically speaking, I suppose that would be half-full, not half-empty. How optimistic of us.

I wonder how often the moon gets a blue earth. Somebody do the math. I suppose it depends on where you’re standing. Doesn’t everything?

Rush Order

Socks are done. I’m back to knitting for me. Remember the porpoise? Well, turns out that wallabies are indeed faster than porpoises, so if you ever find yourself betting on some strange Wonderland caucas race, put your money on the macropod. But didn’t she do a nice job?

The Great Christmas Sock Project of 2009

December 27, 2009 - 10:16am -- swingbug

Last year, I learned to knit. In an effort to figure out this knitting thing and to clothe my family at the same time, I embarked upon The Great Christmas Scarf Project of 2008. I made scarves for the whole family. Lace scarves, cable scarves, drop stitch scarves, scarves of every shape and description. By the end, I felt like I had a pretty good handle on the basics.
