Status Update

June 17, 2007 - 10:10pm -- swingbug

Luke is now 8 months old, with 7 teeth and just enough wisps on his head to get nap hair. He is crawling with speed and determination. Shawn and I are on the look out for recognizable words. Luke is on the look out for trouble – anything he can get into that’s less than two feet off the ground is eligible. He is fascinated with buttons and levers and noses. Balls and balloons are the best thing ever. He’s developed a discerning palette and is instantly suspicious of green food.

Bugged

I consider myself a reasonable woman under most circumstances.

Everyone has limits, however.

Tadpole

May 20, 2007 - 10:09pm -- swingbug

When you were a tadpole and I was fish
And the whole world had barely begun
I saw you swim by with a smile in your eye
And I loved you from that moment on

Saturday night. Luke is cradled in my arms as we pace around a gazebo. He’s tired. Across the garden, light spills from the windows with the muffled sound of music and chatter. Silhouettes of waltzing couples dance across the windows.

Ummm...

My husband and I were standing in the kitchen having a discussion of relative importance. The baby was settled on Shawn’s hip, peacefully watching us bat the conversation back and forth for the moment. At length, he pulled his binky out of his mouth and tossed it on the floor. Still illustrating my point, I scooped up the binky, ran it under the faucet and washed it clean, all without even really realizing I was doing it.

I turned around, concluding my argument and holding out the binky in front of his mouth.

Cutest

April 22, 2007 - 8:31pm -- swingbug

Would I be terribly immodest if I said that I have the cutest baby ever in the whole wide world? Probably.

Do I care if I’m immodest? Not a bit.

I have the cutest baby in the whole wide world.

Mush

We started Luke on solid foods a couple of weeks ago. Everyone’s been asking how he’s doing with it. Eating has never been problematic for this child. I’m told it’s common for babies to have trouble figuring out that whole nursing thing. Not my kid. He wasn’t out in the big bad world for more than an hour before he was looking for a meal. “Hold still, Mom. Let me show you what you do with those things.”

Cover Story

March 29, 2007 - 2:17pm -- swingbug

Several of my friends are on the cusp of having kids and being the environmentally friendly folks that you are, I hope that you’ll consider cloth diapers as an option for your beautiful baby’s productive little bottom. We use cloth diapers with Luke and are quite fond of them. I don’t feel the need to go into the cloth versus disposable debate. It’s a well-covered topic already; run a Google search and read to your heart’s content. I’ll just say that we made this particular choice to reduce landfill waste, save money, and spare Luke some diaper rash.

Advice

Last week was a rough week for Luke. He cut two teeth and had an appointment with the pediatrician involving another round of vaccinations. While waiting for the doctor, I filled out the idiot form. Oh, you’re not familiar with the idiot form? Allow me to explain.

Hooray for Luke!

Exciting news! After a lot of hard work and toil, Luke cut his first tooth today, one day before his 4-month birthday. Hooray for Luke!

By the way, I posted new pictures of the boy yesterday. Enjoy.

Is Your Refrigerator Running?

January 30, 2007 - 3:24pm -- swingbug

My infant son is napping in my arms, which is the only way he’ll nap for any reasonable amount of time these days. This makes it tricky if I actually want to get anything done, like work to help support us or... I don’t know... maybe eat something. However, it does afford me a fair amount of time for studying this little life form I’ve brought into the world.
