Paperback

October 23, 2009 - 5:37pm -- swingbug

Last Thursday was delivery day. The Crow’s quarterly edition came back from the printers and I spent the day running back and forth to post office and dashing in and out of bookstores with armloads of our humble little magazine. One of the problems with Delivery Day taking me in and out of most the independent bookstores in the county is that I invariably leave with more books than I went in with, at least in weight and expense.

Good Morning World

October 14, 2009 - 10:20am -- swingbug
Eat World

Good morning, world. Is it raining where you are? It’s been raining here, and every ant in the tri-county area is taking refuge in my house, little six-legged bastards. And while they’re here, they’re helping themselves to anything they want in the kitchen. They launched a stunning siege last night for the remains left on one plate in the sink and I countered. They returned three hours later for the batter drippings on the underside on a mixing bowl left from the baking of Luke’s birthday cupcakes. We beat them back.

Welcome to Zombieland

September 30, 2009 - 10:21am -- swingbug

I was up for more than two hours this morning before I actually looked at myself in the mirror. Nice rings under those eyes today. Lovely.

Welcome to Zombieland.

My kid doesn’t sleep. He’s a brilliant, beautiful, sweet little boy. He’ll eat anything you put on a plate in front of him. He’s adventurous, generally polite. But he doesn’t sleep. We’ll go through a good chunk every now and again where he’s actually sleeping through the night or close to it.

Now is not one of those times.

Hippopotamus

September 8, 2009 - 3:52pm -- swingbug

Luke walks up to me wearing a pirate hat and singing a pirate song. In one hand, he is brandishing a pirate sword. In the other hand, he has... a hippopotamus.

“What are you doing with the hippopotamus?”

He looks at the hippo. He looks at me. He puts on an exasperated expression that I should go ahead and get cozy with. I think I’m going to be seeing it a lot over the next twenty-some-odd years.

“Holding on to it.”

Duh, Mom.

In Point of Fact

September 3, 2009 - 11:29am -- swingbug

I was making lunch in the kitchen and Luke was watching a DVD in the living room. In point of fact, he was watching The Point, a tradition in my family that dates back before my birth. We originally had it on record. (Kids, records were these large black discs that made music before the world was introduced to CDs. Very groovy.)

This was Luke’s first introduction to The Point.

Half way through spreading the peanut butter on the bread, Luke came running into the kitchen.

“Mommy, you have to come help me.”

I Have No Title for This

March 7, 2009 - 8:41pm -- swingbug

My cat died tonight. I think I need to say that out-loud a couple of times just so it sinks in.

I was running a basket of laundry back to the bedroom while Luke was not eating his dinner in the highchair. I passed Ben sprawled out on the living room floor. “Hi, Kitty.” I stopped two steps later. Ben hadn’t responded. His eyes were open but he didn’t look at me when I passed. The part of me that gets that he’s gone, got it right then.

Seasonal

February 12, 2009 - 11:48am -- swingbug

The take-and-bake pizza store has a sign out front: “Now Taking Valentine’s Day Pre-Orders!” Apple left a note in my inbox: “Apple TV: The Perfect Gift for your Valentine.”

You folks are reaching.
