Paper Hearts

February 9, 2015 - 9:43pm -- swingbug

February is Women in Horror month and my favorite fiction podcast is joining the party with a line-up of female writers who love their craft, or their Lovecraft, as the case may be. So if the standard February world dripping in red paper hearts is too much for you, you might head over to Pseudopod and check out some stories dripping in something else. If that's your cup of poison, that is. I found last week's story "The Godsmaid Clara and Her Many Smiles" by Sharon Dodge greatly entertaining, and the reader, Kim Lakin-Smith, nails it.

Put a Little Love in your Heart

Alright, I admit it. I like Valentine's Day. Not a popular attitude amongst my peers. I'm supposed to dislike it as a commercial Hallmark holiday. (Which of our holidays doesn't fall under that category, I wonder?)

I get it. I get that there can be all this pressure to pick out the right thing for the special someone, or pick out the right someone for the special thing, or to feel badly if there's no special someone right now. There's this evil implication that one must spend silly amounts of money. I get all that.

See, we're doing it wrong.

Zero Bars

Man oh man, did I ever need to get out of town. Last week was fairly nuts. Or the last few weeks... months. I don't think either my husband or I realized how much we needed to get the hell out of dodge until we woke up in a guest bed Saturday morning.

34

So yesterday was my birthday. That means I've made thirty-four trips around the sun and I'm starting on another. And I totally planned on blogging yesterday to share it with you. Really, I did. I had the blog half written in the scratch workspace that is my brain.

I was going to blog a little about being older, about how that's okay, about how my thirties are pretty awesome thus far.

But mostly I was going to talk about simplicity. About how I don't want for much in this life as it is.

There Will Be a Light

“Why do the people at the paint store always look at us like we’re nuts?”

“Total lack of vision, I think.”

“Hmmm.”

Shawn and I are crossing the parking lot of the hardware store armed with four cans of paint and a spur of the moment home improvement idea.  The day before he had been at Ikea with Luke and gave me a call.

Here is one very small example of how amazingly cool marriage is. On Monday, I made a pan of brownies - yummy organic ones with chocolate chips. I love brownies, especially those squares from the middle, all goo and no edges. Here’s where it gets cool: my husband loves the crunchy edges the best. So all week long, round about 4:00 in the afternoon when I make my cup of tea, I’ve been cutting myself a big gooey brownie right out of the middle of the pan, knowing that when my husband got home, he’d be excited that I left the edge piece for him.

That’s rad.
