Star Wars Day

May 4, 2016 - 9:43pm -- swingbug

Happy Stars Wars Day, folks. I've been ultra busy lately, but nothing but the most important intergalactic business could keep from wishing you a happy May the Fourth. So here's a vaguely Star Wars-ish post for you.

Prelude

December 17, 2015 - 4:27pm -- swingbug

So here we stand in this season of waiting on the verge of what could be a new hope. Nah, not Christmas. That turns up every year.

I'm talking about Star Wars, of course.

Folks from my generation seem to be tip-toeing into tomorrow with caution.

"You doing an original trilogy marathon first?"

"No, don't want to get too excited, you know?"

May the Fourth Be With You

May 5, 2014 - 1:04pm -- swingbug

Yesterday was Star Wars Day. We celebrated with bursts of Yoda-speak. Luke and I made wookie cookies while listening to the score of "A New Hope" and in the evening we all watched a little of "Empire Strikes Back", which, of course, is the best of the three. (Thus speaks Swingbug.)

What makes them wookie cookies, you ask?

Well, they're chewy.

We hope you enjoyed this most auspicious of holidays as well. May the force be with you always.

Storm Troopers and the 2nd Amendment

July 2, 2011 - 1:03pm -- swingbug

I had my first 2nd Amendment debate with my son recently at the kitchen table. I was eating breakfast. He had finished his cereal and was shooting at invisible robbers with a contraption built of legos.

“You know, kiddo, I don’t think guns belong at the breakfast table.”

“But, Mommy, I’m... I’m... What’s that word that means ‘saving’ but it’s different. Like what Superman does?”

“Defend?”

“Yes! I’m defending. The robbers want your cereal. I’m defending you.”

Great.

A Force To Be Reckoned With

June 3, 2010 - 8:17pm -- swingbug

We don’t do a whole lot of TV in my household. We don’t have cable. We like to keep the inbound visual media our kid is exposed to infrequent, we always pre-approve it, and when possible we watch it with him. I don’t want to sound like an ogre. It’s just that there’s a lot of questionable material out there and he’s impressionable.

Moral Outrage

August 4, 2009 - 2:06pm -- swingbug

Totally moral outrage!  Infamy, heresy, and blasphemy! The world has gone insane and I'm surrounded by heathens. How and when did this happen?

I was having a perfectly normal sci-fi conversation with a friend – who shall remain nameless – when this friend, whom I generally consider to be intelligent and well-informed, had the gaul to say that Firefly creator Joss Whedon "pioneered the whole cowboys in outer space thing."

Dude. This is someone I know. How is that possible?

Fan Girl

May 22, 2009 - 10:05am -- swingbug

When I heard Fan Boyswas coming to theaters in February, I was itching to get out to see it. Turns out it only debuted in a few select cities and Sacramento was not on the list. Shawn and I talked about driving out to San Francisco for this one. We really did. We went all the way to Vegas not to lay a single coin on a table but just to check out The Star Trek Experience, after all, so the thought of driving two hours for a movie wasn’t totally out of the realm of possibility for us. Couldn’t make it work though.
