“Honey, I need your advice on my knitting project.”

My husband looks up from his computer, reasonable intrigued.

I hold out a baby hat.

A fellow I work with just had a baby, and I like to knit for the office babies. I’ve done sweater sets for twins and one of my buddies in production got a Loch Ness monster for his newborn. Just a little one. This little one is a brand new baby girl, and I had just the right amount of some self-striping yarn left for a nice little hat. I picked out one of my favorite hat patterns and knit along.

About the time I hit the decreases I was starting to get concerned.

“It’s not like you haven’t knit this pattern before,” I told myself, and I knit on.

By the time I was down to two dozen stitches, I was more than concerned.

“Last time I knit it, it was green,” I thought. “Now it’s pink and doesn’t it look, well, sort of like...?”

I hand the hat to my husband. A little cute little baby hat in pink, cream, and light brown stripes, just ready for the cast-off now. He handles it gingerly, mindful of the needles and ball of yarn still dangling from one end.

“Does it...?”

“Kind of looks like a...”

“That’s what I was afraid of.”

“Yeah,” he says, sympathetically, “It kind of does.”

We both giggle.

Frogging the hat now...
