And Today There Was Cake

May 9, 2017 - 9:49pm -- swingbug

I turned 39 on Sunday. The first present I got that day was a stomach flu. What do you get the girl who has everything, right?

My kid very sweetly wanted to make me scrambled eggs for breakfast, which I had to decline. My parents brought me a picnic lunch, which I promptly threw up, and my husband bought me a cake that I couldn't even look at.

For anyone who doesn't know me in the real world, when I am uninterested in cake, something has gone very wrong indeed.

A Retail Scene

December 18, 2016 - 11:42pm -- swingbug

I'm in Cost Plus on a Friday evening at 5:30 pm, nine days before Christmas. Normally, I would be playing hockey at this time. In actuality, this scene isn't that different.

I approach the counter with various Christmas purchases in my basket, which include a bottle of wine. (The wine isn't actually a gift; it's for me. I have a lot of wrapping to do tonight.)

"May I see your ID, ma'am?" asks the young clerk.

I beam at her and hand over my license for inspection. "Thank you for asking," I say, conspiratorially. "I haven't been carded in ages."

So I was brave and I went to my 20-year high school reunion. The family calendar, busy as it generally is, left my husband and I double-booked for the weekend, so we had to divide and conquer. He went off to one event without a date, and I went to my reunion without a date.

So sad.

I sat there at the kitchen table the morning of the event, staring at the tickets, and wondering if I was going to go through with it and walk in the door that night or not.

So yesterday was my birthday. That means I've made thirty-four trips around the sun and I'm starting on another. And I totally planned on blogging yesterday to share it with you. Really, I did. I had the blog half written in the scratch workspace that is my brain.

I was going to blog a little about being older, about how that's okay, about how my thirties are pretty awesome thus far.

But mostly I was going to talk about simplicity. About how I don't want for much in this life as it is.

The Month of May

May 3, 2010 - 10:08pm -- swingbug

Something very odd happened to me today. I was hot. I know, how bizarre, huh? I was sitting outside on my lunch break in the sunshine listening to an audio recording of Dune on my iPod (probably not helping) and I realized I was legitimately too warm. This rarely happens to me. Welcome May.
