Halloween

I haven’t blogged about Halloween yet, which is unusual for me given my preference for the holiday. But rest assured that Halloween has been progressing around the house if not here in my digital home.

I decked my mantle with seasonal trimmings at the beginning of the month. Costumes for my family have been well under way for sometime and are reasonably close to completion - meaning that I began them early enough to feel prepared and have put off finishing them long enough to feel like a procrastinator. Last week I acquired pumpkins. This morning I carved some. This afternoon I baked pumpkin seeds.

Last Monday I bought candy for trick or treaters and told myself I wouldn’t open it until Friday. That night I told myself I would only open the one bag. The next day I told myself, I’d only open two. Today I bought more candy.

While carving pumpkins, I was highly tempted to take one particularly large one and carve “No on Prop 8” into its orange innards. Then I reconsidered. Perhaps just “Vote,” I thought. No. Halloween is about kids and imagination and creativity, a good scare and a barrel full of candy. Pumpkin politics are inappropriate, partisan or otherwise. Kids want Snickers, not sermons. Halloween is Friday. The election is Tuesday. Let’s set it aside for a few more days.

Then I sprinkled a modest display of tombstones and spiders across my porch, and hung a sign on my front door. I meant to get that up two weeks ago. I’ll leave it up until Thanksgiving to make up for it.

I finished the evening up drinking pumpkin juice and watching The Prisoner of Azkaban with Shawn. So double double toil and trouble, something wicked this way comes. Enjoy your holiday.
