Shawn and I are taking a little vacation in Bodega Bay this weekend. He got us a room at The Inn at the Tides, a very nice little place. Incidentally, Hitchcock filmed The Birds here, so there are lots of photos of Tippi Hedren all over the place. We meant to re-watch the movie before we got here, but didn't get around to it. Needless to say, all the birds we've met so far have been polite and aloof.
It's about the perfect weekend on the coast: sunny, clear, warm, and breezy. There is a fog horn going off in the distance even though there is no fog.
Like most small coastal towns out this way (or probably any way) there is an abundant supply of kites and salt water taffy to be had. Bodega Bay doesn't have much in the way of shopping though. There is blissfully little to do here.
This morning, we teetered on rocks to peer into tide pools and met a good many starfish and anemones. At midday, we lounged around the pool and turned a few pages of our books in the sunshine. In the afternoon, we toured Bodega Bay Marine Lab and learned a little about the ecology and geology going on around us. I recommend the marine lab tour if you find yourself here on a Friday between 2 and 4 p.m..
Tomorrow, we might take our kayak out and I want to poke my head into a kite shop and sample some taffy.
For now, I bought myself some nice tea in the fish market across the way. Our hotel room overlooks the pool where small, seemingly amphibious people have been splashing and giggling for hours. Further out, the last bit of sun is glinting off the harbor.
