Holiday Confession

November 23, 2005 - 12:00am -- swingbug

Here we are at t- 1 hour to turkey day and now I'll spill my confession. I've been listening to Christmas music for a week. I know, I know. There are rules. No Christmas until we're through with Thanksgiving. "Well," I thought, "since I did Thanksgiving with my family last week, then I'm sort of allowed. But just music. That's it."

And then today, I had a long day at work. I put in almost 10 hours perched on a levee hauling equipment around. Physical, dirty, dusty work. By the time I left, I was feeling exhausted and gross. I should have gone straight home to shower before going out in public, but as I passed the exit for Cost Plus, I couldn't help myself. I really wanted a little Christmas just then. "I need candy canes," I thought. "Just to be prepared... For after Thanksgiving Day, you know." I emerged 45 minutes later with a star for the top of the Christmas tree, a garland for my mantle, and a big obnoxious string of jingle bells that velcros around my wrist for caroling. (Shawn put it on Meeko like a collar. She froze, with her little neck sticking out like a goose hunting worms and waited for this confusing set of circumstances to work themselves out. I quickly pulled it off and explained to her that Shawn wasn't as funny as he thought he was.)

And then tonight we really did it. We made Christmas cookies. Oh, sure, we didn't call them Christmas cookies, but they're little chocolate butter cookies in the shape of stars sprinkled in crushed candy canes. What do you think they are?

It's not entirely my fault. If Thanksgiving had music, I probably wouldn't have to be celebrating Christmas in November.

Someone send me some turkey carols. We wish you a merry mashed potato and a happy leftover turkey sandwich.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody.
